Description
Nubia and Abyssinia By J. Arrowsmith
.
Description:
Striking and highly detailed
fine unusual 1832 John Arrowsmith's original colored lithographic map of t
Nubia and Abyssinia (Ethiopia). It covers from Darfur east to the Sea of Bab el Mandeb (Gulf of Aden). It includes the modern day countries of Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea as well as parts of Djibouti, Kenya, Egypt, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The map also includes details the politically and socially volatile regions of Darfur (Darfour) and Kordofan in modern day Sudan. This map is centered on the southern reaches of the Nile River. It shows the division of the Nile in modern day Sudan between the White Nile, which flows slightly westward toward Lake Victoria and the Blue Nile which flows slightly eastward to Lake Tana. The Blue Nile had, by this time, been traced to its source, Lake Tana (Tzana or Dembea), in the relatively well mapped Christian kingdom of Abyssinia. The White Nile is shown originating from the Donga Mountains in the extreme lower left quadrants of this map. It is a curious decision on the part of Hall to identify the Donga Mountains as a source of the White Nile, but abandon the associated lake theory that ultimately proved to have some relation to reality. The important caravan route of Sudan to Mecca is noted along with routes of several explorers in the region, including Browne 1796, Poncet 1698, and Bruce 1772, among others.
During the time this map was prepared, Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman commander who was named viceroy of Egypt established the Mamluk dynasty that would rule Egypt until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. Between 1820 and 1833, Ali annexed northern Sudan, Syria and parts of Arabia into the Mamluk Empire

Cartographers:
Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823), John Arrowsmith (1790-1873), and Samuel Arrowsmith. The Arrowsmith family were noted map engravers, publishers, geographers, and cartographers active in the late 18th and early 19th century. The Arrowsmith firm was founded by Aaron Arrowsmith, who was trained in surveying and engraving under John Cary and William Faden. Arrowsmith founded the Arrowsmith firm as a side business while employed by Cary. The firm specialized in large format individual issue maps containing the most up to date and sophisticated information available. Arrowsmith's work drew the attention of the Prince of Wales who, in 1810, named him Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales, and subsequently, in 1820, Hydrographer to the King. Aaron Arrowsmith was succeeded by two sons, Aaron and Samuel, who followed him in the map publication business. The Arrowsmith firm eventually fell to John Arrowsmith (1790-1873), nephew of the elder Aaron. John was a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society. The firm is best known for their phenomenal large format mappings of North America. Mount Arrowsmith, situated east of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is named for Aaron Arrowsmith and his nephew John Arrowsmith.
John Arrowsmith (1790–1873) was born at Winston, County Durham England. He was the nephew of Aaron Arrowsmith, the English cartographer. In 1810 he joined his uncle in the cartography business. After his uncle died in 1823, the family firm was carried on by his sons Aaron and Samuel Arrowsmith, and John began working on his own. The Arrowsmith's were founding members of the Geographical Society of London in 1830. The junior Aaron left the family firm in 1832, and upon the death of Samuel in 1839, John merged it into his own successful business. In 1863 he received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society, which was what the Geographical Society of London was known after gaining the patronage of King William IV. Arrowsmith spent the years after his uncle's death preparing maps for his iconic London Atlas of Universal Geography, the first edition of which was published in 1834 with 50 maps. He published subsequent editions, adding and removing maps until there were 72 plates in one late edition. The atlas continued to be published after his death, the rights to publish the maps being acquired by Edward Stanford in 1874.
